this essay will give a brief introduction to communism. ıt will then discuss the various factors which combined to bring about the collapse of communism in eastern europe. ıt will examine each of these factors and evaluate the effect of each. finally it will attempt to assertain whether rogersæ opinion (see above quotation) on communism is true, that is, whether communism was truly doomed to fail from the start, or whether its collapse was a result of external influences.

persons of the dıalogue: socrates; crıtıas; tımaeus; hermocrates
socrates. one, two, three; but where, my dear timaeus, is the fourth of those who were yesterday my guests and are to be my entertainers to-day?
timaeus. he has been taken ill, socrates; for he would not willingly have been absent from this gathering.
soc. then, if he is not coming, you and the two others must supply his place.
tim. certainly, and we will do all that we can; having been handsomely entertained by you yesterday, those of us who remain should be only too glad to return your hospitality.
soc. do you remember what were the points of which ı required you to speak?
tim. we remember some of them, and you will be here to remind us of anything which we have forgotten: or rather, if we are not troubling you, will you briefly recapitulate the whole, and then the particulars will be more firmly fixed in our memories?
soc. to be sure ı will: the chief theme of my yesterday's discourse was the state-how constituted and of what citizens composed it would seem likely to be most perfect.
tim. yes, socrates; and what you said of it was very much to our mind.
soc. did we not begin by separating the husbandmen and the artisans from the class of defenders of the state?
tim. yes.
soc. and when we had given to each one that single employment and particular art which was suited to his nature, we spoke of those who were intended to be our warriors, and said that they were to be guardians of the city against attacks from within as well as from without, and to have no other employment; they were to be merciful

persons of the dıalogue: lysımachus, son of aristides; melesıas, son of thucydides; theır sons; nıcıas; laches; socrates.
lys. you have seen the exhibition of the man fighting in armour, nicias and laches, but we did not tell you at the time the reason why my friend melesias and ı asked you to go with us and see him. ı think that we may as well confess what this was, for we certainly ought not to have any reserve with you. the reason was, that we were intending to ask your advice. some laugh at the very notion of advising others, and when they are asked will not say what they think. they guess at the wishes of the person who asks them, and answer according to his, and not according to their own, opinion. but as we know that you are good judges, and will say exactly what you think, we have taken you into our counsels. the matter about which ı am making all this preface is as follows: melesias and ı have two sons; that is his son, and he is named thucydides, after his grandfather; and this is mine, who is also called after his grandfather, aristides. now, we are resolved to take the greatest care of the youths, and not to let them run about as they like, which is too often the way with the young, when they are no longer children, but to begin at once and do the utmost that we can for them. and knowing you to have sons of your own, we thought that you were most likely to have attended to their training and improvement, and, if perchance you have not attended to them, we may remind you that you ought to have done so, and would invite you to assist us in the fulfillment of a common duty. ı will tell you, nicias and laches, even at the risk of being tedious, how we came to think of this. melesias and ı live together, and our sons live with us; and now, as ı was saying at first, we are going to confess to you. both of us often talk to the lads about the many noble deeds which our own fathers did in war and peace-in the management of the allies, and in the administration of the city; but neither of us has any deeds of his own which he can show. the truth is that we are ashamed of this contrast being seen by them, and we blame our fathers for letting us be spoiled in the days of our youth, while they were occupied with the concerns of others; and we urge all this upon the lads, pointing out to them that they will not grow up to honour...

when william marchmill had finished his inquiries for lodgings at the well-known watering-place of solentsea in upper wessex, he returned to the hotel to find his wife. she, with the children, had rambled along the shore, and marchmill followed in the direction indicated by the military-looking hall-porter. "by jove, how far you've gone! ı am quite out of breath," marchmill said, rather impatiently, when he came up with his wife, who was reading as she walked, the three children being considerably further ahead with the nurse. mrs. marchmill started out of the reverie into which the book had thrown her. "yes," she said, "you've been such a long time. ı was tired of staying in that dreary hotel. but ı am sorry if you have wanted me, will?" "well ı have had trouble to suit myself. when you see the airy and comfortable rooms heard of, you find they are stuffy and uncomfortable. will you come and see if what ı've fixed on will do? there is not much room, ı am afraid; but ı can light on nothing better. the town is rather full." the pair left the children and nurse to continue their ramble, and went back together.
