a child was standing on a street-corner. he leaned with one shoulder against a high board-fence and swayed the other to and fro, the while kicking carelessly at the gravel.
sunshine beat upon the cobbles, and a lazy summer wind raised yellow dust which trailed in clouds down the avenue. clattering trucks moved with indistinctness through it. the child stood dreamily gazing.
after a time, a little dark-brown dog came trotting with an intent air down the sidewalk. a short rope was dragging from his neck. occasionally he trod upon the end of it and stumbled.
he stopped opposite the child, and the two regarded each other. the dog hesitated for a moment, but presently he made some little advances with his tail. the child put out his hand and called him. ın an apologetic manner the dog came close, and the two had an interchange of friendly pattings and waggles. the dog became more enthusiastic with each moment of the interview, until with his gleeful caperings he threatened to overturn the child. whereupon the child lifted his hand and struck the dog a blow upon the head.

the eclipse of the sun, which you have requested me to describe, occurred in the summer of 1806, on monday, the 16th of june. ıts greatest depth of shadow fell upon the american continent, somewhere about the latitude of 42 deg. ı was then on a visit to my parents, at the home of my family, among the highlands of otsego, in that part of the country where the eclipse was most impressive. my recollections of the great event, and the incidents of the day, are as vivid as if they had occurred but yesterday.
lake otsego, the headwaters of the susquehanna, lies as nearly as possible in latitude 42 deg. the village, which is the home of my family, is beautifully situated at the foot of the lake, in a valley lying between two nearly parallel ranges of heights, quite mountainous in character. the susquehanna, a clear and rapid stream, flowing from the southeastern shore of the lake, is crossed by a high wooden bridge, which divides the main street of the little town from the lawns and meadows on the eastern bank of the river. here were all the materials that could be desired, lake, river, mountain, wood, and the dwellings of man, to give full effect to the varied movement of light and shadow through that impressive day.

spring winked a vitreous optic at editor westbrook of the minerva magazine, and deflected him from his course. he had lunched in his favorite corner of a broadway hotel, and was returning to his office when his feet became entangled in the lure of the vernal coquette. which is by way of saying that he turned eastward in twenty-sixth street, safely forded the spring freshet of vehicles in fifth avenue, and meandered along the walks of budding madison square.
the lenient air and the settings of the little park almost formed a pastoral; the color motif was green - the presiding shade at the creation of man and vegetation.
the callow grass between the walks was the color of verdigris, a poisonous green, reminiscent of the horde of derelict humans that had breathed upon the soil during the summer and autumn. the bursting tree buds looked strangely familiar to those who had botanized among the garnishings of the fish course of a forty-cent dinner. the sky above was of that pale aquamarine tint that ballroom poets rhyme with "true" and "sue" and "coo." the one natural and frank color visible was the ostensible green of the newly painted benches - a shade between the color of a pickled cucumber and that of a last year's fast-black cravenette raincoat. but, to the city-bred eye of editor westbrook, the landscape appeared a masterpiece.
and now, whether you are of those who rush in, or of the gentle concourse that fears to tread, you must follow in a brief invasion of the editor's mind.

after the kings of great britain had assumed the right of appointing the colonial governors, the measures of the latter seldom met with the ready and generous approbation which had been paid to those of their predecessors, under the original charters. the people looked with most jealous scrutiny to the exercise of power which did not emanate from themselves, and they usually rewarded their rulers with slender gratitude for the compliances by which, in softening their instructions from beyond the sea, they had incurred the reprehension of those who gave them. the annals of massachusetts bay will inform us, that of six governors in the space of about forty years from the surrender of the old charter, under james ıı., two were imprisoned by a popular insurrection; a third, as hutchinson inclines to believe, was driven from the province by the whizzing of a musket-ball; a fourth, in the opinion of the same historian, was hastened to his grave by continual bickerings with the house of representatives; and the remaining two, as well as their successors, till the revolution, were favored with few and brief intervals of peaceful sway. the inferior members of the court party, in times of high political excitement, led scarcely a more desirable life. these remarks may serve as a preface to the following adventures, which chanced upon a summer night, not far from a hundred years ago. the reader, in order to avoid a long and dry detail of colonial affairs, is requested to dispense with an account of the train of circumstances that had caused much temporary inflammation of the popular mind.
